ABSTRACT
Romeo and Juliet, two young lovers separated by their families' bitter differences, wed in secret and kick off a series of fateful events building up to a tragic conclusion. Unlike most other modern-day film adaptations of William Shakespeare's works, director Carlo Carlei chose to abandon the play's original dialogue and follow only the spirit of its plot, a move that attracted intense criticism from a number of critics and scholars.
