Night and the City (Apr-1950)

Director: Jules Dassin

Writer: Jo Eisinger

From novel: Night and the City by Gerald Kersh

Music: Franz Waxman

Producer: Samuel G. Engel

An ambitious conman in London concocts a scheme to promote Greco-Roman wrestling, exploiting the fame of retired superstar wrestler Gregorius. Gritty film noir of nearly the highest caliber, feeling sometimes like a 1930s gangster flick. Dassin's final American film before he was blacklisted based on testimony before HUAC by fellow director Edward Dmytryk. Remade as Night and the City (1992).
