Director: Joel Coen

Writers: Joel Coen; Ethan Coen

From novel: Red Harvest and Glass Key by Dashiell Hammett

Prohibition-era Irish crime boss Leo O'Bannon maintains an uneasy peace with upstart Italian rival Johnny Caspar. When Caspar needs errant bookie Bernie Bernbaum killed, O'Bannon extends protection to him because his girlfriend Verna is Bernbaum's sister. Tom Regan, lieutenant to O'Bannon, works to avoid outright war but the unwise decision about Bernbaum may divide his loyalty. Magnificent, carefully crafted gangster film, among the Coen Brothers' finest work.

REVIEWS

Review by anonymous (posted on 1-Aug-2006)

It took me a couple viewings to completely figure out what was up with the myriad plot twists. Complex and layered to say the least. (Just like life - watch your back.) And that is the reason I now LOVE THIS MOVIE! Thanks once again to those brilliant Coens and another standout role from the underrated Gabriel Byrne (who should have a received at least one Oscar by now).
