Portuguese treaty port in China from 1557-1887, after which it became a Portuguese Colony. Sovereignty reverted to China on 20 December 1999, with an agreement that Macau should operate with autonomy for fifty years. The city maintains many institutions separate from China, though the Chinese central government assumes responsibility for defense and foreign policy.
