Founded as "Poverty Flats", renamed after land agent Benjamin B. Redding. An attempt was made in the California legislature to change the name to Reading, after Mayor P. B. Reading, and while this was the official name from 1874-80, it did not stick. Incorporated 1887, seat of Shasta County since 1888.
