Risk Factor: Lyme Disease

First discovered in Lyme, Connecticut, in 1975. Carried by deer ticks, which parasitize white-tailed deer. A characteristic bulls-eye rash usually forms around the bite, followed by flu-like symptoms, fever, weakness and joint pain. Left untreated, the disease can affect the nervous system, causing encephalitis, palsy, epilepsy, and paralysis.
