The Jackson 5
MUSIC
Soul band, active 1962-90. Organized and managed by their father Joe Jackson. Signed to Motown in 1969. More curious than the expected showbusiness lies about their ages was Motown's myth that Diana Ross, rather than a Motown talent scout, discovered the group.
By 1975, the Jackson 5 was flagging in popularity, and the group made the daring move to break from Motown and sign with CBS. The move came with unpleasant surprises: Motown had trademarked the name they had toured under since the 60s, forcing a name change to The Jacksons; the Jacksons were made to give up the rights to future royalties on their old hits; and on top of that, Motown demanded they pay for studio time used to record some 150 songs that never saw the light of day. Michael's brother Jermaine, who had married Berry Gordy's daughter several years before, quit the group. But with the move came a much more favorable royalty rate, and the opportunity to record their own material, which perhaps rescued the group from obscurity.
Michael Jackson began to focus on his solo career in 1979, and the ill-starred 1984 Victory tour marked the end of his involvement with the group.
