TRADE ORGANIZATION

From 10 to 14 December 1959, representatives from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Venezuela, Iran and Kuwait met in Baghdad, Iraq to establish the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, a permanent intergovernmental organization designed to offset the influence of foreign oil companies. Membership has since expanded to include Algeria, Angola, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia.
