ZOO

Founded at Vengemar (The Child Estate), the 30-acre home of Lillian Child, who died in 1951. Before she died, Child deeded her estate to the Santa Barbara Foundation, which in 1953 deeded it to the City of Santa Barbara. In 1963, the Santa Barbara Zoological Gardens opened, now known as the Santa Barbara Zoo. The zoo maintains over 600 animals.
