The work of self-taught photographer James Nachtwey has been described as "a guided tour of hell". His photos have captured catastrophe and war from Afghanistan, Bosnia, Chechnya, Ground Zero in New York, Guatemala, India, Indonesia, Israel, Kosovo, Lebanon, Nicaragua, Northern Ireland, Pakistan, the Philippines, Romania, Russia, Rwanda, Somalia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Sudan, the West Bank, and Zaire. In Baghdad in 2003, he was seriously injured when a grenade was thrown into the vehicle he was riding in. He has never married, and little is known of his personal life, by Nachtwey's choice. "I don't want people to be concerned about me," he has said. "I want them to be concerned about the people in the pictures."
