Armani aborted his study of medicine to work as a designer for Italian fashion house Nino Cerruti, and then founded his own in 1974, with partner Sergio Galeotti, a young architect who later died from AIDS in 1985. He designed the costumes for American Gigolo (1980) starring Richard Gere. By 1994, the Armani Group exhibited gross revenues of $787 million. In 2000, the Guggenheim museum put on an exhibition of his work, in New York City and Bilbao.
