Executive summary: Mallory Keaton on Family Ties

As a youngster, Justine Bateman became interested in acting when her younger brother, Jason Bateman, joined the cast of Little House on the Prairie. She began working as a professional actress at the age of 11, and at 15 she was cast as Mallory Keaton, the airheaded elder sister on Family Ties. She was twice Emmy-nominated for the role, and at the height of her sitcom fame, she starred in a heartfelt advice video for teens, How Can I Tell If I'm Really In Love?, with Ted Danson and her brother, directed by the Batemans' father.

In 1988, NBC tried to make Bateman into a movie star, funding a theatrical film called Satisfaction, with Bateman as front-girl for a minor rock band. The network even had Bateman host Saturday Night Live to promote the movie, but audiences showed little interest in seeing her cover the Rolling Stones song.

In the 1990s, she was in the American version of the British sitcom Men Behaving Badly with Rob Schneider, but she was replaced midway through the show's brief run. She was later in the cast of Showtime's drama Out of Order with Eric Stoltz and Felicity Huffman. Bateman still pops up occasionally on TV or in movies, and she has also worked as a fashion designer at her own Justine Bateman Designs.

Beginning in 1993, she spent a decade battling anorexia, bulimia, and compulsive overeating. Cured with the help of born-again Christianity, she is now available for paid speaking engagements on the topic of health and wellness.

Bateman's father was a semi-successful producer and occasional director of low-budget films, including The Headless Eyes starring Bo Brundin, and Land of No Return with William Shatner and Mel Tormé.
