Toynbee on a number of occasions found himself, prompted by his historical surroundings, momentarily transported to an earlier time. He called this circumstance the "local annihilation of Time." See Volume X of A Study of History. His theories influenced science fiction author Ray Bradbury.

"Toynbee Tiles" have been mysteriously appearing in cities on the east coast of the United States, and in South America, embedded in pavement.
