Absolute ruler. In order to travel overseas, Francisco Linares Alcantara served as President from 1877-79, as Guzmán's puppet. He lost power in a military coup d'état while on a visit to Paris. After his reign, general chaos ensued with short leaderships and foreign military interventions after it became clear that Venezuela would not honor its obligations.
