Norwegian organic farmer and fundamentalist Christian, who with a semi-automatic rifle shot and killed 69 people on the island of Utøya near Oslo, during a summer camp on 22 July 2011. He also committed the bombing in central Oslo earlier that same day, which killed 8 and caused injury and widespread damage to the immediate area. As a farmer, Breivik was able to buy six tons of ammonium nitrate fertilizer, far more than he would require for legitimate purposes. On 24 August 2012, the Oslo District Court found him guilty on all 77 counts of murder and sentenced him to a minimum of ten years "preventive detention", which can be extended indefinitely. It is likely Breivik will spend his life in prison.
