Leonid Hurwicz was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2007, for his work on mechanism design, a sub-field of economics that explores inefficient markets, wherein buyers and sellers have unequal knowledge of the commodity being exchanged. He was a lawyer when he fled the Nazis and came to America in 1940, and taught meteorology at the University of Chicago for several years before earning recognition as an economist. He wrote extensively on game theory, welfare economics, public economics, and mathematical economics. The concept of mechanism design was originally devised by Hurwicz and developed further by Eric Maskin and Roger B. Myerson, who shared Nobel honors with Hurwicz. Ninety years of age when he received his laurels, he was the oldest person to receive the Nobel Prize in any category.
