Executive summary: Governor of Maine

Ran away from his abusive father at age eleven, and spent two years homeless in adolescence. Worked as a shoeshine boy and dishwasher, earned college tuition and became General Manager of Marden's Surplus & Salvage and then Mayor of Waterville, Maine. Elected state Governor in 2010, succeeding John Baldacci, who did not seek re-election.

Conservative "Tea Party" Republican; anti-abortion rights, pro-gun rights, pro-nuclear power. Campaigned calling for reductions to Maine's business taxes, environmental regulations, and energy costs; supported joining other states' lawsuit against 2010 federal health care reform. Known for a gruff but charming persona — in his campaign, he made headlines promising that "as your governor, you're going to be seeing a lot of me on the front page saying: 'Governor LePage tells Obama to go to Hell'."

As Governor, he has further burnished his reputation as an eccentric. He has maintained that climate change is good news for Maine, because the melting of the Arctic icecap has opened up the Northern Passage as a shipping lane. Ardently opposed to alternative energy sources, he has stated that a wind turbine used for power generation at the University of Maine is effectively fake: "Guess what, if it's not blowing wind outside and they have somebody visiting the campus, they have a little electric motor that turns the blades." This is, of course, untrue. He also made headlines in 2015 for misunderstanding the requirements to veto legislation, which allowed 65 bills he had intended to veto to instead become law.
