Executive summary: Co-Founder of McDonald's With his younger brother Dick, Maurice "Mac" McDonald owned and operated the first McDonald's restaurant from 1948-64, and developed the "speedee service system" that made the company famous. They began selling franchise rights in 1953, and hired milk shake machine salesman Ray Kroc to handle franchising the following year.
