By the time the law finally caught up to him, Weev was already feared and reviled for his involvement with radical troll collectives Ban Town and GNAA. In 2010, his organization, Goatse Security, discovered a flaw in the iPad's 3G sign-up flow, allowing them to make a trivial query and receive the email address of an iPad owner in return. Over 110,000 emails were harvested in this fashion, and the collection was posted online. In retaliation, Weev was convicted under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and sentenced to 46 months in prison. His conviction was overturned in 2014.
