Invested $1.4M in George W. Bush and Edward W. Rose's 1989 purchase of the Texas Rangers. After Bush was elected governor in 1994, Schieffer served as general partner of the team until its 1998 sale to Thomas O. Hicks, and during Bush's presidentcy he was appointed US Ambassador to Australia, and later Ambassador to Japan. Named as "monitor" of the troubled Los Angeles Dodgers franchise, acting with limited ownership authority, after the team was seized by Major League Baseball in 2011.
