Gaspare Campari was hired at a Turin tavern as a dishwasher when he was 14, and within a year he was promoted to bartender (apprentice to the tavern's master drink maker). He opened his Caf Amicizia in Milan in 1860, where he concocted the still-secret recipe for his famous mildly bitter apritif, and established the predecessor of today's Gruppo Campari. Campari's son, Davide, took over the business after his father's death, and his marketing moves made Campari a popular item in cocktails worldwide. The recipe is believed to include bergamot oil, ginseng, orange peel, pomegranate, quinine, rhubarb, and about five dozen other flavorings, but the company still brags that only its President knows all the ingredients.
