The child of Armenian immigrants fleeing the Armenian Genocide, Rushdoony grew to become one of the leading thinkers in far-right Christian Fundamentalism. He is the founder of the Chalcedon Institute, an organization dedicated to furthering the ideas of "reconstructionism," which calls for government by a theonomy -- rule by the literal word of god. Reconstructionism supports a postmillennialist eschatology, meaning the idea that Christ will only return to earth when biblical law reigns over every corner of the globe. He is also considered the father of the modern home-schooling movement, encouraging the family as the starting point for the implementation of Mosaic law. A close friend of millionaire philanthropist Howard Ahmanson, Jr., who studied under him and was at his bedside when he died.
