Philosopher and playwright Gabriel Marcel wrote about issues of death, religion, mortality and immortality, faith, fidelity, hope, and love. He was raised in a household where even mentioning religion was forbidden, but drawn to Catholicism by François Mauriac. During World War I he volunteered with Red Cross, and was assigned the duty of relaying news of death to soldiers' and civilians' loved ones.
