Executive summary: Pharaoh, built the Great Sphinx at Giza

The fourth Pharaoh of the Fourth Dynasty of Ancient Egypt, Khafre took power at the death of his older brother Djedefre, and some experts theorize that Khafre murdered his brother to take the throne. His image appears on numerous statues and monuments from the period, including the spectacular lion-like Great Sphinx at Giza, which has a human face believed to be Khafre's likeness. His pyramid, often called the Pyramid of Chephren or the Second Great Pyramid, is built on higher ground and so appears to be taller than his father Khufu's Great Pyramid, but it is actually about thirty feet shorter. Twenty-three statues of Khafre once guarded the granite-lined funerary temple at the base of his pyramid, but his mummified remains have not been found.
