Son-in-law of promissory note trader Marcus Goldman, he joined the business in 1882. It was renamed Goldman Sachs & Company three years later. Sachs took over the firm after Goldman's death in 1904, and greatly expanded its range of stocks, bonds, and convertible debentures, and began underwriting public securities.
