Many economists predicted a financial downturn after World War II, but Lawrence R. Klein correctly predicted an economic boom as people purchased the items they had been denied during rationing of the war effort. He studied at MIT under Nobel laureate Paul Samuelson, and later gained respect for his complex macroeconometric models of national, regional, and world economies. He served as President Jimmy Carter's chief economic adviser, and was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1980.
