German-American biochemist Fritz Lipmann won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1953, for his discovery of the acetyl-carrying Coenzyme A (CoA), a coenzyme present in all living cells and an essential component in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and certain amino acids. Lipmann studied under an earlier Nobel laureate, Otto Meyerhof, and his prize was shared with his friend and colleague, Hans Krebs.
