Executive summary: King Crimson
Ian McDonald received his musical training in the British military, and went on to become a founding member of King Crimson (two not essentially dissimilar situations). He left Crimson after only one record, but rejoined briefly for the album Red in 1975. The idea at the time was that Ian would replace Robert Fripp in the band's line-up, instead but the band dissolved entirely. In 1977 he co-founded the band Foreigner, but was dismissed from service after the band's third record.
