Polish activist and journalist Adam Michnik attended Warsaw University, but was repeatedly expelled for demonstrations critical of the ruling Communists. He was active in the protests of 1968, was jailed in Wojciech Jaruzelski's 1981 declaration of martial law, and was active in Lech Walesa's Solidarity trade union. He founded the muckraking Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza in 1989, which he still edits.
