Executive summary: Father of string theory

Gabriele Veneziano has said that he and his colleagues "accidentally discovered string theory". He devised dual-resonance models which have developed into string theory and formed a basis for the quantum theory of gravity. He spent most of his career studying quantum field theories, specializing in quantum chromodynamics, string cosmology, and supersymmetric theories. He is among the best-known proponents of the "pre-big bang scenario", which posits that the big bang was more the result of a long preceding evolution than the incident which itself initiated time.
