Birthplace: Sturgetown, Jamaica

Gender: Male

Rex released his first single as Co-Pilot at the age of fifteen. He changed his name to Shabba Ranks soon afterwards, and began to compile what would shortly become a prolific catalog with such early singles as 1988's "Needle Eye Punany". The ubiqitous, uniform beat of reggaeton is called the "Dem Bow" after the Shabba Ranks track in which first appeared.

Shabba Ranks is also a noted homophobe, having once advocated the crucifixion of homosexuals in an appearance on the Channel 4 programme "The Word". This viewpoint did not come as a suprise to anyone with a Shabba Ranks album and a working knowledge of Jamaican slang.
