Co-founder of the De Beers diamond company, and Governor of Cape Colony, the British-controlled settlement of southern Africa. Namesake of Rhodesia (the section of Cape Colony now known as Zimbabwe), and remembered in South Africa as an early architect of the separation of blacks and whites that was later called apartheid. In his will, left funding to establish the Rhodes Scholarship program.
