Seeing potential profits from the recent invention of the telegraph, Werner Siemens and engineer Johann Georg Halske founded Telegraphen-Bau-Anstalt Siemens & Halske (the Siemens & Halske Telegraph Construction Company), forerunner of today's Siemens. The firm established offices in Berlin, London, Paris, St. Petersburg, and other major cities, soon became the dominant player in global telegraphy.

As much a scientist as an industrialist, Siemens also researched the atmosphere, invented an electroplating process for gold and silver, pioneered the dynamo-electric principle, designed the first electric elevator, and was the first cablemaker to use gutta-percha latex as an insulating agent for telegraph wire -- a breakthrough which allowed Trans-Atlantic telegraph cables to be laid. He was ennobled by Emperor Friedrich III in 1888, becoming Werner von Siemens.
