Philip Sporn worked as a lamplighter while still in high school, then was hired as an electrical engineer at American Electric Power, and worked his way up to President of the company. As an engineer he helped design and construct the firm's first diversified electric power centers, and as an executive with an engineer's knowledge he kept AEP among the early adapters of new technologies, including advanced generators, high-voltage transmission lines, and interconnection of his company's system with other utilities. After the 1965 blackout that darkened much of the Atlantic Seaboard, he came out of retirement to head a consortium of 26 utilities to improve power reliability. He never went anywhere without his slide rule, and he was one of very few non-academics elected to membership in the National Academy of Sciences.
