Bill Proenza

Bill ProenzaAKA Xavier William Proenza

Born: c. 1945
Birthplace: New York

Gender: Male
Race or Ethnicity: White
Occupation: Scientist

Nationality: United States
Executive summary: Director, National Hurricane Center, 2007

Proenza was reprimanded by Mary Glackin, Acting Director of the National Weather Service, after making public (though entirely true) statements to the press regarding the deplorable state of the QuikScat satellite. Loss of the QuikScat, launched in 1999 to measure wind-speed, would mean a 16% decrease in the ability to forecast where hurricanes would strike the United States. The satellite has exceeded its life expectancy and no replacement is in the wings. On 13 April 2007 he was warned by NWS official Louis Uccellini, "You better stop these QuikScat [and other] complaints. I'm warning you. You have NOAA, DOC and the White House pissed off." Proenza was ousted from his position by hurricane center staff on 9 July 2007.
