Executive summary: Greg Sanders on CSI

Eric Szmanda plays Greg Sanders on the original CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. In the early years of the show, his character was an earnest young lab technician, but midway through the show's fifth season, the character passed his proficiency test and was promoted to "full-fledged crime scene investigator". In getting the promotion, it probably helped that Szmanda had been at work on time and ready to go, while two of the show's other background actors, George Eads and Jorja Fox, had refused to show up on the set. Eads and Fox had hoped to pressure the producers into giving them a raise, but instead they were publicly fired, then re-hired when the producers felt they had made their point. Szmanda as Sanders got his promotion a few weeks later.

As a teenager, he was once suspended from high school for wearing a t-shirt that mocked the school's losing basketball team. As a struggling actor, he spent five years working for BMG Music, in the US office of two of the conglomerate's European subsidiaries. His big break was The Net, a short-lived TV series based on the movie. Szmanda, with badly dyed blonde hair, played "Sorcerer", the teenaged computer geek who helped the Sandra Bullock-analogue out of sticky situations. He has also appeared in a handful of films, most notably Bret Easton Ellis's The Rules of Attraction with James Van Der Beek.

In August of 2006, while on vacation in Hawaii, Szmanda stopped for a few drinks at a tiki bar on Kauai, and he was beaten up by "a big Samoan woman."

His great-uncle is Ray Szmanda, who spent more than 25 years as the bespectacled, over-enthusiastic TV pitchman for Menard's, a midwest chain of home improvement stores.
