Former Arizona Cardinal, who walked away from his multi-million-dollar football contract to become an Army Ranger and fight terrorism in Afghanistan. Much was made of his heroic April 2004 death, but in May it was revealed that Tillman was actually killed by friendly fire. He was shot at relatively close range -- ten yards -- by M16 fire. According to a Spc. Bryan O'Neal, who was at Tillman's side at the time of his death, Tillman's last words were, "Cease fire, friendlies, I am Pat fucking Tillman, damn it! [repeated multiple times] [then after another soldier asked for God to save them] Would you shut your fucking mouth? God's not going to help you; you need to do something for yourself, you sniveling [dies]."
According to remarks by his brother at Tillman's memorial service.
