By jumping of 26', 11.25", Ralph Boston broke Jesse Owens' long jump record on 12 August 1960, which had stood for 25 years. In 1961, he was the first to ever jump more than 27 feet. Boston won the AAU long jump competitions for four years running, 1961 through 1964. His world record was broken by the astonishing jump of Bob Beamon, 29' 2.5", itself a record which stood for 23 years.
