Executive summary: Kohl's Department Stores

Max Kohl came to America from his native Poland, and worked in a factory until 1927, when he used his savings to open a small corner grocery store on Milwaukee's south side. He gradually added additional locations until 1946, when with great fanfare he opened Milwaukee's first modern-style supermarket, complete with such then-unheard-of innovations as an in-store bakery and deli. By the late 1950s, Kohl's was a leading force in midwest groceries, and in 1962 Kohl opened a department store in Brookfield, Wisconsin, also named Kohl's, which quickly became a successful chain. The department stores were sold to Brown & Williamson in 1972, and Kohl retired in 1979 after selling the grocery chain. The grocery chain was liquidated under the ownership of The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company in 2003, but the department store chain now has almost 1,000 stores in 47 states. Kohl's son Sidney earned additional millions as a Florida real estate developer, and his other son Herb Kohl owns the Milwaukee Bucks and served several terms in the US Senate.
