NFL franchise, joined the league as an expansion team in 1933 for a $2,500 entry fee. Not to be confused with the Major League Baseball franchise with identical name, the Pittsburgh Pirates. The NFL's Pirates were renamed to become the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1940.
