COMPANY

Founded 1870 by John D. Rockefeller, William Rockefeller, Henry M. Flagler, (of Rockefeller, Andrews & Flagler), and Stephen V. Harkness. The company was declared a monopoly on 15 May 1911 and ordered splintered into several pieces. Early history of the company is documented in the 1904 work The History of the Standard Oil Company by Ida M. Tarbell, pieced together from her magazine articles.
