COMPANY

Founded in 1939, GI was a manufacturer of diodes, transistors, and logic chips. Acquired General Transistor in 1960. Spin-offs include Microchip Technology, Inc. (1989), Commscope (1997), and General Semiconductor (1997, later bought by Vishay Intertechnology in 2001.) General Instrument itself was acquired by Motorola in January 2000 for $11B.
