COMPANY

Chain of department stores founded in Minneapolis by George Draper Dayton as The Dayton Company in 1902, which opened the first Target store in 1962. Merged with Hudson's in 1969, becoming Dayton Hudson, and acquired Marshall Field's in 1990. In 2000 Dayton Hudson changed its corporate name to Target, which remains by far the corporation's most profitable division.
