Netscape

COMPANY

The first (and for several years the best) internet browser for general use. Founded in 1994 by Marc Andreessen and other veterans of the Mosaic project at the University of Illinois' National Center for Supercomputing Applications. Netscape's fortunes faltered after Microsoft began giving away its inferior browser, Internet Explorer, for free. Purchased by AOL for $4.2B in 1999, and scuttled in 2008.
