The starship U.S.S. Palomino encounters a lost ship, the U.S.S. Cygnus, in orbit around a black hole; aboard is mad Dr. Reinhardt and terrifying robot Maximillian, who intend to enter the black hole along with the unwilling crew of the Palomino. Cashing in on the coattails of Star Wars but actually more in the vein of Silent Running (1972) or 20000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954). Received Oscar nominations for Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects.
