Set in 1969 Upstate New York, the Kantrowitzes rent a cottage in the Catskills for the summer, their two children cared for by their mother and grandmother. The husband, Marty, is a hard-working television repairman. His wife Pearl, after she tries to get her husband to take more time off from work to spend with the family, has an affair with Jerome, itinerant blouse salesman, almost a hippie. The daughter, now 17, has her first period and starts dating. Outstanding performances save this from feeling like a made-for-TV production.
