Over-the-top production of the life of Marie Antoinette based on Stefan Zweig's book, the first honest attempt to depict the reality of her life. Betrothed by the powerful Maria Theresa, she marries Louis, grandson of King Louis XV. The king, about to annul her marriage for her insolence, dies and Marie suddenly finds herself Queen of France. Received Oscar nominations for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Art Direction, and Best Original Score. Won the Volpi Cup at the Venice Film Festival.
