Biopic tells the tale of Wiley College professor Melvin B. Tolson and his debate team's unprecedented run of success.

Melvin B. Tolson, ambitious debate coach and professor at Texas's "Negro" Wiley College in the 1930s, aspires to assemble a debate team capable of competing with white-dominated schools in an age where Jim Crow laws reign supreme. The Great Debaters follows Tolson as he works against daunting odds brought about by institutionalized racial prejudice to form a squad that would ultimately compete against Harvard University's 47th annual debate team.
