Louis Calhern reprises his Broadway role as Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., American jurist who rose to a seat on the Supreme Court. The film spends relatively little time on his decisions, choosing rather to concentrate on Holmes' domestic life. Received Oscar nominations for Best Actor and Best Costume Design.
