A young 19th-century Baltimore detective must work with author Edgar Allan Poe to stop a man from comitting grisly murders inspired by his works.

Emmett Fields, a well-respected young detective in 19th-century Baltimore, is called in to investigate the gruesome murder of a mother and daughter in a locked apartment. When he notices striking similarities between the murder and a fictional killing in an Edgar Allan Poe short story called The Murders in Rue Morgue, he brings the alcoholic author in for questioning, ultimately teaming up with him to stop the mysterious suspect from initiating future killings as several other Poe-inspired murders crop up around Baltimore.
